Behind the comparisons

About See Vatican and our editorial method

See Vatican is an independent editorial guide to published tour options. We help you understand the route, the group and the conditions before you choose.

Our method

How we verify the named booking option

  1. Start with a real matching offer

A collection must have at least one relevant tour whose displayed rating is 4.5/5 or above, with at least 20 traveller reviews. A title alone is not enough: we check whether the named option supplies the route or format in question.

  2. Keep the option name visible

Group sizes, transport and inclusions can differ within one listing. The tour passport identifies the option used in our comparison.

  3. Read the practical conditions

We compare duration, group format, route, admissions, exclusions, meeting details and cancellation. Conflicts in a listing stay visible and become a point to confirm with the operator.

  4. Explain the editorial choice

Recommendations say who an option may suit and what to weigh up. A longer itinerary, an earlier departure or a private guide can be useful for different reasons; none automatically makes a tour the best for everyone.

  5. Show evidence and its date

Supplier and official visitor sources appear near the relevant content. The current comparison was checked on 25 October 2026. Availability, prices and access must be reconfirmed for the visitor’s chosen date.

A consistent starting point

Ratings, review volume & selection

We use the combined traveller rating and review count supplied for each Viator product. The admission threshold is 4.5/5 after rounding to one decimal place, with at least 20 reviews. We keep every checked offer that meets the threshold and fits a collection; there is no fixed shortlist size.

The default order balances average rating with review volume. A perfect score from a handful of reviews should not automatically outrank an established tour. For ordering only, we combine the reported score with a baseline of 50 ratings at 4.5/5. The score you see beside a tour is always the provider’s actual average, rounded to one decimal. You can also sort larger collections by rating or review count.

Ratings belong to the whole product listing, which may contain several options. They do not prove the quality of one particular departure or variant. When a tour fits more than one collection, it can appear in each; repeated appearances do not add reviews or create a new rating.

Review summaries show the overall average, total count and star distribution, with Viator and Tripadvisor identified as the sources. Traveller review text stays on the provider’s website. Our editorial descriptions explain the published itinerary and conditions; they do not claim to summarise every traveller’s comments.

We merge duplicate representations of the same option where the evidence identifies them. A collection with no qualifying match is left out until a suitable offer can be verified. A high rating alone does not establish accessibility, special access or a route’s suitability for a particular visitor.

Primary sources

Where the details come from

Tour facts come from the published provider information on Viator or the operator’s own website. Official Vatican sources help explain ticket channels and the difference between visitor routes.

Vatican Museums ↗

The Museums identify tickets.museivaticani.va as their official online ticket channel.

St. Peter's Basilica ↗

The Grottoes and the Necropolis are different places; Necropolis access requires a reserved guided visit.

The Holy See ↗

Official tickets for General Audiences and Papal liturgical celebrations are free.

St. Peter's Basilica ↗

Security checks remain mandatory; the lift goes only to terrace level and does not reach the summit.

We do not publish a live price or a seat guarantee. The itinerary facts describe the named option; the clearly labelled traveller rating covers its whole product listing. A listed offer is not a confirmed departure.

How the site is funded

Affiliate links, clearly labelled

We may earn a commission when you book through our Viator links. This does not change which option is described, and the final price and conditions are set by the booking provider.

We also link to official admission channels and direct operators. These alternatives make it possible to decide whether you want a guide, independent entry or an operator enquiry. See Vatican is independent of the Vatican and is not an official ticket office.

Changing details and corrections

The date beside a source tells you when that comparison was checked. Supplier terms, routes and access arrangements can change afterwards. Follow the final booking confirmation for the visit itself.

When the source contains conflicting details, we describe the discrepancy rather than silently choosing the most attractive version. Changes to an option should be reflected in both its tour page and the collections that use it.
